Recommendation: The Follower

Today I won't talk about a comic, or a webcomic but web prose fiction.

Lyle is an average looking guy, if you see him walking beside you in the streets; you wouldn’t take a second look. But that is part of his job; Lyle is a freelance operative/courier (1) in the business of espionage.
But when a job goes wrong Lyle has to stay in New York City with no contact to his bosses, as a normal person as he tries to figure out what went wrong. To makes things harder he has anxiety attacks.
Described by the author as “An espionage mystery, told in installments.” This story will get you from the start with good narration and a character unlike other spies in fiction.

Webcomic recommendation: Gravedigger

“Digger” McCrae is criminal and he’s really good and what he does. A tough man; who can do any job for the right amount of money.

In The Scavengers Digger is out of prison and needs Money Fast. He joins a gang with a plan to rob from gun dealers in México. Everything seems to go okay, but of course, there is a broad with an Angel’s face, but a devil’s heart.

The art narration is great with fantastic action scenes that make every page dynamic.

Crime recommendation: The Couriers

Moustafa y Special have an delivery company in New York city. They delivered almost anything. But they also do other works outside the law, dealing guns, stolen cars and more. Mobsters, guerrillas, rival gangs these friends and partners can take them all.

Brian Wood delivers a fun and entertaining story full with violence and car chases.

The art by Rob G. is dynamic but it has some minor problems with characters proportions.  The art in the last story is by Brett Weldele who has more traditional style.

Crime recommendation: Scene of the Crime

In crime stories, the protagonist might make it alive at the end, he (she) sometimes win, maybe  gets the money, kills the villain, the love interest stays, or he doesn’t end up in jail. However, even if he escapes, the dark and corrupted world in which the story took place still exists, and that makes crime fiction depressing some times. Scene of the Crime is like that.

Jack Herriman is a Private Investigator who is hired by Alex Jordan to find her sister. She was last seen with a hippie cult. Jack investigates, but an unexpected change of circumstances, forces him to go beyond his duty, only to find dark secrets and unforgivable crimes.

The art of Michael Lark (inks by Sean Phillips) moves the story in a fantastic way and showcase the characters emotions. Creating a feeling that the creator would evolve more in other series like Criminal and the Fade Out.

The first story “Market Street” is set in 1920’s San Francisco where the brothers Jacob and Izzy are muscle for the Jewish mafia. The older brothers is having an affair with a married woman, but everything gets complicated when she becomes a widow and the mob boss wants her for him.

The second story “Hollywood Treatment” set in the 1970’s, it’s the story of Jacob granddaughter, Anastasia Weiss: lawyer of the stars. One day her neighbor and super movie star is brutally murder and the killer might be closer than anyone thinks.

The third and last story “On Ice” is set in the 2000’s with Jacob Weiss and Calvin Coolidge as two messengers who receive a severed hand. Now a criminal gang and an evil company are trying to catch them. Because it’s set in the 2000’s this story is over the top with bazookas, girl’s in bikinis with machines guns and explosions.

Crime Comics: The Creep

Oxel Karnha used to be claims adjuster when the symptoms of the acromegaly syndrome forced him to quit. "Ox" takes his abilities to investigate and becomes a Private Detective.

One day an ex girlfriend from collage calls Ox to ask him to resolve her son’s suicide.  Feeling melancholic about the one love who got away, Ox accepts the case.

The investigation leads Ox to secrets and the truth behind the tragic event.
The character avoids confrontations, he doesn’t fight, even when people insult him for is appearance. For Ox the world is already bad enough.
The art is by Jonathan Case, who already showed his skills in The Green River Killer, this time the colors add a mood to this bleak story.
The mini series had covers by Frank Miller, Mike Mignola, Ryan Sook, Tonci Zonjic and Case himself.

Recommendation: Just Another Sheep

Yes!!! Wednesday’s recommendations are back, because there is too much good staff out there.

It’s 1967, and in the USA the youth is reveling against the government and protesting the Vietnam war. Here a young shy man joins a group of hippies and ends up experimenting what he never dare before. Oh, and he has the psychic power to project his feelings and experiences to others.

This webcomic has an historic topic and a supernatural vibe, making it stand out from others. Resulting in an entertaining plot.

The story telling is wonderful with little details and “tricks” with in the panels. The coloring is perfect.

Crime Comics: Miss Don't touch me

This French comic is really pretty to look at. The cartooning it’s fantastic the design of characters, their faces, the details of the backgrounds and the bright colors make this a comic to browse through many times.

It looks better in the book.

The story in the other hand, equally good, but really sad. In the Paris of the 1930’s a young maid Florence, witness the murder of her only friend and family.
The police say it was suicide, but Florence suspects of the “Butcher of the dances” a man who leaves maimed girls outside the city.

Fired from her work and with no money, Florence finds work at a brothel where she keeps investigating the crime and managing to stay virgin.
When she enters this world is when she sees how little the life of these girls is worth.
At the end, when the mystery is reveal, we find a world even darker than the legend of the “Butcher”.

Webcomic recommendations: Minnie n' Slug

Most of the webcomics I read are for mature audiences, with long plots, violent, dark and there is Minnie n’ Slug. A cute comic about the life of a single dad “Slug” Brody and his little princess Minnie. (We don’t know what happened to the mother)

Slug is a southern without much sophistication, but he’s hard worker and honest. Minnie is cute, perspicacious who knows how to control her father. There are friends of him, other kids, and a cute kinder garden teacher. If you want to smile and say “Awwwww” read this webcomic.

Crime Comics: Sweets

A detective Curt Delatte from New Orleans recently buried his daughter, and  still in mourning he must stop a serial killer as hurricane Katrina is on it’s way.

The detective and his partner keep finding victims and follow evidence, but they can’t find any connection between the victims.
Although the resolution of the mystery it self wasn’t very satisfactory to me, the story is entertaining. The plot moving fast between the investigation and the past of the murderer.

The art is sketchy and “dirty”, but every line and dote is in the right place.
